New hair colour- Garnier Nutrisse Review

The last time I coloured my hair was in the beginning of December. Originally I loved it as the highlights added some lovely dimension to my hair, but 8 weeks later the colour had lifted considerably and started looking brassy.
As my natural hair colour is a little more ashy the orange tones made my roots look even more obvious. You can see them peeping through above.. eek!

I needed a quick change before Valentine's Day so I decided to go for something a touch darker, but still on the brown spectrum. The colour that caught my eye was Garnier Nutrisse 6.3 Deep Reddish Brown (really imaginative name).

The application was pretty standard, though I did start to worry a little when the cream began taking on a purple hue! The only thing I noticed is that there seemed to be less product than in most box dyes (and believe me I have tried my fair share from a range of brands). I know if you have long hair it is recommended to use two boxes, but I have never had a problem before as I take my time during application and spend the 30 minutes waiting time in an attractive shower cap that also seems to help the colour spread evenly.

So ladies, remember we were hoping for a rich 'reddish' brown...

The flash actually makes it look a little better, but straight after the dye my hair definitely had more than a tinge of purple. It was also uneven, with the ends being a lot darker than the roots, which is strange as I applied the least amount of product there and the dye was on the ends for the shortest amount of time.

After a few washes it seems to be evening out a little, though this is only because it won't stay in my hair!

Even though this dye is marketed as a permanent dye, hence the horrible ammonia stench, every time I wash my hair it runs much more than any semi-permanent I have ever tried. When first rinsing it out I noticed that the dye just kept running and running and it took almost half an hour until the water became somewhat clear. The next time I washed it in the bath it was a scary sight! Now, 3 washes later I am at a loss as to what to do as it seems deterimined to stain every towel that I own, and given the current rain I am scared of what will happen if I don't keep it under a hat and umbrella at all times.

Garnier Nutrisse gets a big thumbs down from me :(. As much as I enjoy having pink foam all around me every time I have a shower it's a little worrying that my hair can start leaking at any sign of precipitation!

Have you guys ever tried this range of dyes? Did you have a similar problem or is this just my luck ;)?

  1. I used to dye my hair with box dyes but even though I would only use the colour through the lengths and ends for 5-10 minutes at the end of the colour they still ended up black with the roots brown so I had to have it stripped of at the hairdressers! I just go every two months now and get it done at the hairdresser, more pricey but safer x

  2. OoooO Thank you for your review Natalya, I was thinking of changing brands for my hair colour, thank to you I'm definitely not trying this one, I think I'm going to stick to L'Oréal...

  3. You shouldn't use these box dyes, they not good for your hair and almost never gives the quality they promise neither color nor care.
I always buy professional dyes, I don't know if it's possible at the UK but you should try. I'm using Wella Colortouch (in 3) which is a semi-permanent dye, but I can assure you it has every ability like a permanent dye. It's ammonium free, makes the hair extremely shiny and the color never fades(I once tried 3 months!), it even makes the dry roots less visible!
You should try it if you can!

  4. @e-melanie. I normally use L'Oreal too, it's by far my favourite :) xx

    1. Garnier is the best. L'oreal has anominia however you spell it. Garnier nourishes your hair even when coloring it trust me. but i guess it depends on the different hair type people have

    2. You know the reason your hair came out a bit orange was cause your hair was too bright? maybe if you took longer time to leave in the dye, but if you wanted the real color you probably should of died your hair brown or dirty blonde first.

  5. I myself only use semi-permanent dyes, but I was under the impression that red hair dye is notorious for washing out very quickly! MakeupbyRisa doesn't wash her hair for about two weeks after dying it red! Anyway, your hair is lovely, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Wait until you have the dreaded grey hair to deal with. That is a whole other can of worms!

  6. My hair is exactly the same, it's brown with reddish, orangeyness to it and colour will NOT stay in my hair at all. I would probably have to dye it about every 3 weeks or something because it starts to look faded and patchy! Maybe the only way is to get it done professionally! xx

  7. gosh. that has happend to me so many times with garnier! no wonder. i've used sooo many different brands myself.. i think the two DIY thats have stood out for me are Loreals feria line and the good ole revlon color stay is it? i cant quite remember but we've all seen it. it's super cheap and works great for me! i just used the light brown shade this time... but you're right this color keeps coming off everytime you shower! :/ i like your hair! always. xxx

  8. LOL@ pink foam in the bath! Definitely a no-no for hair dye!

  9. I have used box dyes for 15+ years. I've also had my hair dyed at expensive salons and tbh I always thought I did a better job myself. I had the same experience as you with the Nutrisse, it seemed to wash out. I wouldn't buy it again. The one I always go back to is L'Oreal Preference. Although as I have quite a bit of grey now none of them last that long. It sounds like you have some colour build up on your hair and that's maybe why it didn't take evenly. That has happened to me in the past. If you need to dye your hair you could use semi-permanents for a while until the colour build up has grown out.

  10. I actually love the Nutrisse hair dyes! It's what I use to get my hair blonde, althought I do find some of the shades realllllly aren't what they are on the box. I remember I used Dark Golden Brown and it came out full on auburn :/ Was a bit missleading to say the slightest.

  11. I have actually tried that same exact shade and on my dry but dark brown hair I ended up purple-red! It would not have mattered except for the fact that every single wash so much color would wash out I could see it in the suds. Not fun.

I love the L'Oreal Feria line - they always work really well and have quite a bit of product.

  12. Hi Natalya
I have just used this exact dye on my own hair and it has turned out lovely. I unfortunately had to use two boxes and it took me over an hour to just apply the dye but the colour has come out a lovely dark red. I've not had any pink shampoo bubbles either but maybe that is because my hair is very dry!!! Best thing about using 2 boxes is it means twice the conditioner!! Sorry you had such a rubbish experience with this dye, its one of my favourites!!!

  13. Your roots came out lighter because it is "virgin hair" (no color on it) and the heat from your scalp will allow it to process faster. So your ends are darker because you probably have previous color on them which would take longer to process.

Box dyes aren't good to use on hair simply because they contain metallics. (not good) But i though id let you know next time apply 1/2 inch from scalp through your ends then do your roots last. Cosmetology student :)

  14. I have been a hairdresser for 40 years and have come across your problem many times. It appears to me that your hair was probably very dry on the ends and grabbed the colour. Don't pile your hair up on top of your head when you apply colour- this creates more heat at the scalp area and also the colour gets all over the ends- hence an uneven colour. But the problem is now how to fix it and for that i do recommend a hairdresser and they can do one of two things. One very cheap the other expensive. The second choice is the better of the two for the hairs sake. There is a product that actually shrinks the colour pigment (without harming the hair) allowing the colour to be washed out of the hair. Get the right hairdresser and they will be able to do this and even out the colour without loosing the lot.the second method involves what we call a bleach wash and is applied very quickly to the unwanted dark areas only. This is a little drying on the hair and must be done by a profesional, but is the cheapest method of the two.
    . Hope this helps

  15. I also tried the Garnier product, deep intense auburn...big mistake! I rinsed my hair for 45 minutes after applying it, and it wouldn't come out! I stained 3 towels by continuing to rinse 3 more times today. I'll try again later tonight, but I've been using OTC hair color for years and have never had an experience like this!

  16. Came upon your blog while trying to find a new har colour. Maybe a reader can help? I have been using Loreal Superior Preference Incandescent Dark Red for years and love it. It turns a gorgeous shiny red on my dark brown hair. I have a lot of greys but it covers them well. Trouble is now Loreal have deleted this one from their range - does anyone have any suggestions about what might be similar?

  17. This was the worst dye that I've ever used. I bought the light brown shade because I wanted LIGHT BROWN hair. Instead it came out bright red. I was absolutely astonished and checked to see if the packaging was right (that I hadn't picked up the wrong box) and no, there it was in green and white - Light Brown. It turned my roots ORANGE. Yep. Tango orange. Oh, and it stained my pillows, towels, hair turban, shower tray and just about everything my hair touches a horrible dirty orange. I've complained officially to Garnier about this. I have to bleach strip this disgusting Ronald McDonald colour now.

  18. I myself have used Garnier dark brown 40 on my light brown hair. It turned out beautifully!!! But that was also the first time that I has ever dyed my hair. If you dye it a lot you are at more risk for loosing your color because of it being over treated. As for the coloring issues sometimes it's just the formula, sometimes pilling it up on your head, and sometimes it can actually be from your shower water...... If you have well water and it contains even a little bit of iron it can mess with your hair..... When I was little I had platinum blonde hair and there was a slight problem with the water and it turned the bottom of my hair red!!!! My mother was so horrified!!!! So the water can play a part in how your hair turns out......

    ReplyDelete
  19. I had the same problem! Except, I used Garnier's Ultra Intense Red. I came across your page because I was trying to Google whether anyone else had the same problem as me. It's been about a week for me so far and the color's still running on my towels (ESPECIALLY my towels!) and slightly rubs on the back of my shirts after a shower. I will never use their color products again, it's way too stressful to deal with. I even have to avoid wearing white just in case.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I have been a prolific hair dyer for many years and have never used this brand. wanting a brighter red, I decided the colour on the box was exactly what I wanted.....BIG MISTAKE!! To be fair, the colour was great.....if only it would stay on my hair! I too have to avoid going out in the rain for fear of very attractive streakage! It is now a week on and about 20 washes later (at least 2-3 washes every day! ) and still the bath looks like a horror scene. I have emailed Garnier twice and to be honest there is obviously NO customer care as they have not replied. I will definitely not use this brand again, I just wish I had found this blog before I had used it! :(

  21. I love Garnier...high lights and low lights ...it saved my scalp. After using pro and boxed dye...my hair has gotten thinner on top due to scalp problems caused by strong dye...Garnier felt fabulous on my head...the smell was lovely...worth it not to go bald...You should NEVER apply any new color on your ENDS at all and purchase color that matches the ends not a color that is brighter and lighter than the ends. Color never lifts color it deposits. Be gentle with your hair ladies...it is the only hair that you have on your head and wigs are hot and uncomfortable even the expensive ones. Garnier will be gentle and the color is not artificial looking as in Loreal products. Love my new Garnier 53...I am a true Chestnut blue eyed Polish girl...Happy to be ME.

  22. Yowsa - similar story using the Garnier BL26, Reflective Auburn Black. I've been using Nice and Easy browns for a long time now mostly just on the roots but felt like everything was getting a bit dark. Liked the Garnier color on the box but the color took very unevenly with the Garnier (the roots are pink/purple while then ends are a nice normal color). I'm gonna really try washing the color out tonight (tons of pink foam!) thank god it's the holidays and winter - i'm gonna wear a hat and hibernate for a few weeks

  23. Oh my gosh I thought it was just me. I'm also having the same problem with the color washing out. The first rinse must have been at least 45 minutes! The next day I washed my hair and noticed some - it does happen sometimes. It's been a week and it's still coming out in the shower. It also gets on my clothes, bathrobe or towel. I definitely will NOT use this again even though it was a great color for me.

  24. Ditto ladies, I just Googled to see if anyone had this problem with the hair dye washing out. I was really excited because I have dark brown hair and have always wanted a bolder red. The color turned out GREAT but it continues to bleed all over my towels. Thank goodness I have short hair or it would be getting all over my clothes too. Thank you for sharing your comments, this helps me not feel alone on this!

  25. I bought the intense red color in medium auburn bc I just loved the way it looked on a YouTube beauty guru. I just needed 1 box on my medium size but thick hair. I also found this site after googling about color washing out. I'm on over 3 weeks now and it's still washing out! Irritating. I have to take my own stained towel everywhere I go. Since I was new to dying I thought it was normal. The sad part is that I absolutely LOVE my color. :-(((. Anyone know a good red color similar that does not do this??? How about henna???

    ReplyDelete
  26. I have used this for years and my husband teases me because I get so many compliments on the color. One thing I learned to do : Always rinse color out with ice cold water, as it 'shocks' the color for staying power. Yes, it does come out a little in the shower, but I have used several brands and have found this to be the case with all. I also do not wash hair every day, because red is the fastest fader (and my hair is dry anyway).

  27. I used the Garnier med red for brunette and I could not get the water to run clear!!!!I do like the color. I was concerned about the product not setting and continuing to bleed every time I wash, so I called the 800 number on the box and they acted like they have never had a report of this kind before. That was my exact question" Is anyone else experiencing this?" I wish they would just be honest and admit this. Anyway they are sending a $5.00 coupon for my next purchase. Don't know how I feel about that. Seeing how it will be so much work to get the stains out of towels and clothes. Oh and I lost a good amount of hair trying to rinse for 25 minutes. Lot of stress for $5.00 off.

    1. OMG! I wish I could have found this out before I bought this dye!! I got the Fiery Red of the Nutrisse Ultra color!! I usually use Nice & easy auburn color! but here is is getting harder to find these shades for some reason?? This product is ABSOLUTE CRAP!! I got caught out in a down pour yesterday! and I can tell you YES this shit ran red dye all down my face and neck! destroyed my clothes! and this is after a week of washing! I have email the company! but if I am lucky enough for them to offer me a useless money off coupon! I will tell them where to shove it!

  28. Ugh. My dye did the same thing, I thought it was just me so I also called them. They were very rude and tried to turn things on to me saying I'm not doing it right saying I needed to make sure the water ran clear the very first time (I was in the shower for about an hr. so what do they want me to do? Stay in there for the whole day?) basicly a waste of my time effort and energy. Its been over a week and I'm still bleeding =-=

  29. I am very pleased to read all these comments. I have been going to the hairdresser for the last few months to have my hair dyed a copper red.I'm happy with the result although it's costly. I was thinking that maybe a foam dye may do the job and be a lot cheaper, but having read these comments, I think I'll keep going to the hairdresser!

  30. Hi, I decided to see if I could find a less smelly hair colour. Funnily enough there was a test of "natural/herbal" hair dyes in my Dad's "Which" magazine, the last place I'd have thought of looking! "Herbatint" came out well; I have been using it for quite a while now and am very happy with the results, though I am only using the "N" range not the "fashion" colours. Best thing with it is there is no horrible smell. Downside is the higher price; expect to pay twice the price of the big brands. Health food shops etc sell it for about £8 or £9 a box. Cheapest online price I have found is £6.95. But hey, we're worth it aren't we?

  31. Hi there! I have been coloring my hair for years and I really love red shades, the problem: no matter what brand u use it will always fade fast!! :( (and also stain your towels, clothes, pillows) I learned like the other comment above to rinse with cold water and if water doesnt run clear quickly go on and shampoo it! it will remove product excess, then leave in conditioner 5 min. Another great thing you can do to your hair is a home made oil treatment: get 1/4 cup of olive oil add 1/4 almond, coconut or grapeseed oil (if you dont like the smell add drops of any u like lavender, rose, etc) so before-dye it wont get damaged during the process and do it after- dye to avoid dryness. Also I tried all the brand of color box there are! right now I love L'Oreal Excell it's quick & great color and hair ends up healthy, for REDs use L'Oreal Imedia Excellence but keep in mynd it always fade leaving an "orangey" color so, when u buy your box also buy color shampoo & conditioner for red hues.

    1. Oops i forgot about de oil treatment! when u have your 1/2 cup oil mix heat it, u can use microwave for 30 sec. insert your finger it should be just nice warm and apply to directly to dry hair starting by the ends, then lengths only if your scalp is dry apply it there, massage it all over then put on a showercap and let it sit for 20 or 30 min and relax is a home-spa thing! :D Then shampoo, might need double shampooing if your hair is healthy. You'll end up with soft-shiny hair avoid if you have greasy hair! Cheers from Mexico!
